What To Know About Sleep Apnea
May 15, 2023Is Obstructed Airway and Poor Facial Development a Concern?
Yes, this is a concern that you should take very seriously. There are many children who suffer from these conditions because their symptoms mimic other issues and they are misdiagnosed. If your child experiences frequent ear infections, sinus infections, allergies, asthma attacks, or acid reflux and treatment is not working, there is a chance they are experiencing complications from an obstructed airway and poor facial development. The airway includes the mouth, nose, throat, windpipe, and voicebox. When it does not develop properly, it can lead to the problems mentioned above and cause other serious health complications as the child grows, such as:
- Heart problems
- Obesity/insulin resistance
- Developmental and behavioral issues
- Gum disease
- Abnormal buildup of plaque and chronic tooth decay
MyoBrace – Myofunctional Therapy
We know that reading the information above may be a little unnerving, but thankfully, we have a treatment solution to help your child. MyoBrace corrects the placement of the tongue in the mouth to help children swallow correctly and learn how to breathe through the nose. It also helps to widen the jaw so that it can fully develop and have enough space for the teeth. The hope is that the teeth will come in straight and braces will not be needed. This preventative, pre-orthodontic treatment can be used on children from the ages of 3 to 15. The process uses a series of removable intraoral appliances that your child will wear for a few hours during the day and overnight.
If you are concerned about your child and the manner in which they breathe or if they are experiencing any of the issues mentioned, be sure to contact our office located in Charlotte, NC to schedule an appointment. We can perform an evaluation, make a treatment recommendation, and move forward with treatment to improve your child’s symptoms and give you peace of mind. We are here to help!
